Buffalo Scavenger Hunt Announcement 2009
By hotbuffalo on Wednesday, July 8, 2009
There will be more information coming soon but one major event in Buffalo, 1 month from today, is the Buffalo Scavenger Hunt (http://www.buffaloscavengerhunt.com).
The Second Annual Buffalo Scavenger Hunt will again turn Buffalo upside down for an afternoon, August 8, 2009. The Hunt, a fun promotional event created to provide Buffaloians a unique venue to interact while exploring their own city, is aligning with new sponsors and continues to support Camp Good Days as this thriving experience expands.
Last year, The Hunt sold out to capacity of 140 participants, with participation expected to exceed at least 300 in 2009. Teams, dressed in costumes and choosing team names ranging from Buffalo sports heroes to local television commercial personalities, roamed all over downtown Buffalo, Elmwood Village and Allentown collecting unique items and fun photos.
An after party featuring the live music of Among Criminals had participants entertained for hours. The Hunt distributed prizes including cash and mountain bikes donated by Labatt USA to the winning foursome, along with gift certificates to local clothing shops for best-dressed teams. The 2009 Hunt will take place from noon to 5pm August 8, with an after party to follow at Darcy McGee’s Irish Pub.
Charlie Riley founded The Hunt in February 2008 as an event to pass the slow winter months, but since has taken on a life of its own. “The response was unreal, so we decided to make this a more structured event that can open the fun up to more people and hopefully help some great causes along the way,” said Riley.
“In one short year, The Hunt has turned into a highly anticipated annual party/fundraiser, but we are progressing slowly to make sure it is run properly,” noted Riley. “We have partnered with great companies so far and look forward to adding new sponsors, like New Era, Darien Lake, Nike Reuse-A-Shoe and Collegiate Village this year, who see the coveted demographics of those involved.”Nominated as one of the Best Events of the Year by the Buffalo Niagara Event Professionals, The Hunt does not allow use of vehicles, promoting walking and public transportation. “There are a few reasons why, mostly safety, but I am extremely focused on making this as sustainable, or “green” an event as possible. Eliminating unnecessary travel for the day reduces CO2 emissions, but also allows the participants to interact with pedestrians, shop owners, etc. Last year, a few teams took photos with a wedding party, and I received an email from the bride explaining how great she though this event is,” noted Riley, who also owns Queen City Green, helping push the sustainability of the Hunt.
“Teams take this very serious, and had way too much fun in the process, and that was in pouring rain the first time. If we can showcase Buffalo with several hundred people all enjoying themselves, it’s really fun to watch,” added Riley.
