…for those who love the City – #4

Good morning all!  I thought instead of just posting a few links to interesting local stories, I’d write a little something today.  So where does one begin?  Hmmm…  Lets see what my noggin has inside…

The greatest unrecognized treasures of the eastside (and Buffalo as a whole) – CHURCHES

As many of you know, I’m not a religious man but do have get respect and admiration for the Church and the sense of community it provides.  Churches are often the center piece of a community and can be considered the glue that binds a region together.  They also provide services of many types and act as a location for communal socialization.  In this day and age, as the Catholic Church and others continue to downsize, so much is lost.  Closing of a church is often the result of a decline in parishioners.  A church cannot survive with out members in its congregation.  As the population of Buffalo has decreased in the past fifty years, several churches have closed.  A closed church can either survive in a new role or fall into disrepair, as so many churches and other buildings have done throughout Buffalo.

Here are some links.

Churches of Buffalo’s eastside (Broadway-Filmore area churches) that still continue in their intended role.  Note that some even still offer masses in Polish!  Also note that St. Albert’s is scheduled to be closed but the parish continues to fight the ruling from the Catholic Church.

Here is one that continues down an uncertain path (Transfiguration).  Check out the links on the page.  David Torke at FixBuffalo.com has been following this one for some time.

And another (St. Matthew’s Church)

Here is a nice reuse

And another one

And another one

And another one

One that is waiting

another one wating (only $180,000 thru Realty USA)

more waiting

I suggest that if you can find a minute, swing by these architectural gems and check them out… or go to a mass… or go to a show… or buy a condo… or buy a church!

Great link – Karl Joskers church photos

Hope you enjoyed!
